What hotels change when they decide to take dogs seriously. Renovation is where a pet policy stops being a paragraph and becomes flooring, door thresholds, washable surfaces and a way out to the garden at six in the morning.

We follow the refurbishments that make a room genuinely liveable with an animal, and the ones that stop at the welcome mat.

What the experts say

The building decides more than the policy

A hotel can write the most generous pet policy in the market and still be uncomfortable with a dog if the room fights you. Carpet that holds odour, a bathroom with no washable floor, a single lift shared with a busy breakfast service, and no ground-floor exit after hours are structural problems, not service failures. The refurbishments worth reporting are the ones that fix those: hard-wearing sealed floors, wipeable wall finishes up to knee height, doors that close quietly, and direct outdoor access from the lower floors.

Renovation is also where weight limits come from

Restrictions rarely start with the animal. They start with lift capacity, corridor width, the number of rooms a property is willing to take out of general circulation, and how quickly a room can be turned around between guests. Understanding that explains why weight limits and breed restrictions differ so sharply between two hotels on the same street, and why they move after a refit. We track the announcements in hotel policy news and the room-level result in suites built around a pet. The material choices overlap almost entirely with low-impact refurbishment, and increasingly with the systems hotels install to manage rooms.

Where refits are happening

German-speaking and Benelux properties have been the most systematic about it. Start with German hotels that accept dogs and Polish addresses set up for pets.
