Some hotels are worth the journey for the building alone: a converted monastery, a modernist landmark, a house signed by an architect whose name still means something. This section covers those properties when they also welcome animals, and explains what a remarkable structure implies in practice for a guest travelling with a dog or a cat, from circulation and flooring to the outdoor space actually available.

What the experts say

A remarkable building is not automatically a comfortable one

Grand staircases, polished stone and protected interiors look extraordinary and can be difficult with an animal. Listed buildings in particular limit what a hotel is allowed to change, which is often why the pet policy is narrower than in a new-build property: fewer rooms opened to animals, stricter weight limits, sometimes a designated pet floor. We say so when it is the case, rather than leaving the guest to discover it at the arrival desk. Properties that have solved the problem usually did it during works, which is exactly what conversions that kept the animal in mind documents.

Architecture, interiors and concept

The building sets the constraints, the interior decides the daily experience, and the concept ties the two together. What happens once you step inside is the layer a guest actually touches, while hotels built around a single idea push the architecture into a narrative. All three sit under our inspiration desk, where we group the properties chosen for how they look and feel rather than for where they are.

Where these buildings are

Europe concentrates a large share of them, often in cities where the historic fabric has been reused rather than replaced. Italian landmarks that accept animals and listed French houses open to dogs are the two hubs where this kind of address comes up most often in our booking pages.
