The Barrio de Santa Lucia is one of the oldest corners of Merida, laid out as a hermitage and a small square in 1565 and given the park it has today in 1804. Acqua in Bocca sits a few doors from it, behind the front of a casona that has been taken apart and put back together with some care. Inside, the plan is the old Yucatecan one: rooms arranged around an open patio, and at the centre of it a pool that does most of the work in a city where the afternoon heat is the main event. Guests tend to talk about Gino at the front desk before they talk about the architecture. That is usually a good sign.

Why It Works

Three reasons. The house is genuinely restored rather than merely decorated, and the rooms were drawn one at a time, so the one you book is not the one next door. The pool patio gives a small hotel a proper centre of gravity, which is why ten rooms never read as a corridor. And the pet policy is not an afterthought: the hotel keeps a page of its own for guests arriving with animals, a different level of commitment from a checkbox on a booking engine. Why This Location

Calle 60 is the spine of the historic centre, and Santa Lucia is the stretch of it that people actually linger on. The church and the park stand together at Calle 60 by Calle 55, ringed by terraces that fill once the light goes. The Plaza Grande and the cathedral are a straight walk south along the same street, and Paseo de Montejo runs north off the same axis. What this address really buys is the ability to leave on foot and come back on foot, at whatever hour suits an animal, without moving a car in a centre where parking is a project of its own.

Ten Rooms, No Two Alike

The room count is small and deliberate. Each was designed with its own plan and its own character, so the step between categories is not a list of extra square metres but a change of room. The upper floor holds the tall ones, several with a bathtub set into the room itself and a line of sight through to the shower, the detail the house puts forward as its signature. Downstairs the rooms sit closer to the patio and the water. Beds and pillows come up repeatedly in guest accounts, which for a house this size is the line that matters. Mornings Around the Water

The pool patio is where the day starts and where it ends. Water, coffee and infusions are set out through the day at no charge, and the coffee gets singled out often enough to count as a house detail rather than a courtesy. Breakfast is served on site. An Italian kitchen has been part of the plan since the hotel opened, which the name rather gives away, and the tables of Santa Lucia are close enough that the question rarely turns urgent.

Travelling With a Dog in the Centro Historico
