The road out of Joshimath climbs in tight turns towards Auli, and a little over two kilometres up, near the old TV tower, it widens just enough for a low run of rooms and cottages set back behind a garden. This is Aaryam Resort, Auli. It is not a slope-side lodge and not a town hotel, but the quiet middle ground between the two, and that is exactly what it sells. Guests come down off the cable car in the late afternoon, park in the yard, and finish the day on the terrace while the light leaves the Garhwal ridgeline. A small house, run at a small scale, making no attempt to be anything else.

Why It Works

Two things decided this one for us. The first is the pet policy, which is unusually plain: animals are welcome and there is no supplement, on a stretch of the Himalaya where most addresses either refuse dogs outright or bury a fee in the small print. The second is the layout. A garden, a terrace and ground-floor cottages give a travelling animal somewhere to actually be, which is rarer than a tick box marked pets allowed suggests. Add a kitchen cooking regional food and a front desk that guests single out by name, and the address earns its place on a shortlist for the Auli season.

Why This Location

The property sits on the lower Auli road, above the centre of Joshimath and below the ski meadows, and that gap is the whole point. Staying down in Joshimath puts you in a working bazaar town with traffic and pilgrim crowds. Staying at the top puts you in the snow with nothing open once the lifts stop. Here you are close enough to reach the Joshimath cable car station early, and far enough out to walk a dog on a quiet road at dusk. The same junction carries the roads on to Badrinath and to Govindghat, so the base holds up in summer as well as in season.

Accommodation splits into two ideas. The rooms are compact and conventional, the better ones angled at the mountains rather than the road, with a deluxe category that buys floor space more than a different outlook. The cottages are the reason to book ahead: separate, garden-facing, and far easier to live in if you are travelling with an animal or unpacking for several nights. A family room takes four. Everything is on a domestic scale, which suits the place. The terrace is the common room in practice, and on a clear morning it is where everyone ends up with a cup of tea before the drive up.

Pahadi Cooking, Served at Altitude

The kitchen works from Garhwali home cooking rather than a pan-Indian hotel menu, and it is the detail guests return to most often. Expect the staples of these hills, cooked to order and served in a dining room small enough that the staff remember what you ate the night before. Room service runs alongside it, which counts for a lot after a cold day out. Breakfast is unhurried, and worth taking outside when the weather allows.

Arriving With a Dog: What to Know Before You Book

Pets are accepted without a supplement, which removes the usual negotiation, but the practicalities of the approach are worth planning. The last stretch is a hill road that navigation apps handle badly, and guests regularly mention overshooting the turn near the TV tower, so ask for directions when you confirm. Parking is free and on site, which is the simplest way to arrive with an animal in the car. Nights are cold at this altitude in the snow season, and the garden is the place to let a dog stretch before the drive up to the slopes.
